DATA WAREHOUSE OVERVIEW

Since being coined by Bill Inmon as a particular design strategy, the term Data Warehouse has come to mean many different things to many different people. The term evolved from a design strategy and was picked up by marketing groups to help generate sales of disk-drives, boxes, client/server solutions, DBMS’s, tools, consulting services, etc.

Advanced Strategies has been involved in many Data Warehouse projects (both successful and unsuccessful).
To us, a Data Warehouse is simply defined as “One of many data architectures designed to support business information needs while simultaneously supporting operational processing needs.”
While a Data Warehouse architecture is appropriate for many situations, it is not appropriate for all.

Many times people ask the nebulous question “Do I need a Data Warehouse?”. The specific questions they need to ask are (1) Are we ready to properly make business decisions based on data, (2) Do we have the data needed for these decisions, and (3) Which of the various architectures will best enable us to access this data?
